Press Release: 11 June 2019
Thank you for Supporting Red Cross Emergency Appeals
Recent devastating flooding in parts of South Africa as well as a second cyclone to batter neighbouring Mozambique and Zimbabwe in just two months has raised alarm bells about the effect of climate change on the SADC region.
The South African Red Cross Society would like to thank you for responding to our Emergency Appeals aimed at assisting victims of recent natural disasters. More than 30 tonnes of items such as blankets, non-perishable Foods, Clothing, Baby Care, Sanitation and Medical products were received from the public, business owners, Corporates, Media and NGOS.
We appreciate our Volunteers who sorted and packed the goods into boxes donated by Metro File and Jaguar Land Rover SA, and the help from South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) to transport the items to Mozambique.
In addition, we thank Kaya FM Radio for their on-air appeal which raised items from household brands such as Huggies, Royco, Samsung and others. Other contributors include The Ridge school in Westcliffe Johannesburg, Eskom, Telkom, Deloitte SA, Divine Life Project, Fluor, DRA Global Logistics, Nedbank and Shoprite.
A special acknowledgement to SANTAM, Nedbank, Telkom and other companies from across South Africa who responded with large financial contributions towards Red Cross emergency Flood Relief operations across the country.
With your kind support, our regional teams were able to distribute hundreds of mattresses, food packs, household kits and blankets. Our Volunteers also assisted in serving hot meals and providing shelter for displaced persons.
