On 30 November 2018, Know your status end the AIDS epidemic by 2030
SOWETO, 30 November 2018— Build up event for World AIDS Day 2018 is an opportunity
to harness the power of social change to put people first. The theme this year is “Know your
status”. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, there has been a
significant progress HIV/AIDS response since 1988, wherein 3 in 4 people with HIV know
their status. However, it is still a long way to go as the need is to reach all those people who
are living with HIV and don’t know their status. It is important to ensure that all these people
get quality care and prevention services.
The South African Red Cross Society Soweto Branch is hosting a build-up activity towards
World AIDS Day. The Objective is to strengthen and disseminate World AIDS Day messages.
Over 500 community members are going to be involved with different cooperate companies
and raise awareness. HIV/AIDS Ambassadors will be sharing their experiences and
empowering those who are affected and infected. Red Cross will be providing HIV testing
services. Importance of testing:
– HIV testing is important to know your status, for expanding treatment and ensuring
that all people with HIV are able to lead a healthy and productive life.
– By knowing your status, you get empowered to protect yourself and your loved ones.
– Know your status in access to medicines for children, all children living with HIV will
be able to access treatment, not just the 52% who have access today.
– Know your HIV/AIDS status, all people can be included as part of the solution.
‘Know Your Status’ theme encourages public to get tested. HIV testing is important to know
your status, for expanding treatment and ensuring that all people with HIV are able to lead a
healthy and productive life.
