Many left homeless after shack fire

On Sunday the 18th of December, 87 shacks built inside an abandoned warehouse in Marlboro were burnt down to the ground.

A four-month old baby, her father and one other adult died after the shack fire broke out in the afternoon near Alexandra Township. A few residents sustained injuries and were treated for smoke inhalation including the mother of the infant who was rushed to Edenvale hospital after sustaining some burn injuries. The cause of the fire is still unclear and according to emergency services personnel. A number of families have been left destitute and have no belongings to call their own and have no roof over their heads after the fire destroyed all in site.

SARCS staff was there to respond and were on site on Monday to assess the depth of the disaster. A few non-perishable food items were donated in order to reach out and assist. Assessments are on-going and SARCS as a team will further measure the needs of all those affected.
